The northern tip of the Lower Sunshine Coast is a place of great
wonder to locals and visitors alike. Just outside Ravens Cove and accessible with the 16' runabout are Sechelt First Nations Pictographs, also called " rock paintings " Red in color, these paintings are done in mercuric sulfide, and date back to before the non-native exploration of the Coast in the 1800's. The pictograph sites are places of great cultural significance to the Sechelt Coast Salish Peoples, and are awe-inspiring to visit. Egmont
You can reach Egmont either by boat or by land from the turnoff approx.
1/4 mile before Earl's Cove. The boat trip is about 20 minutes each
way and makes a great outing to get an ice cream or let the kids pick
out some candy at Bathgate's Store - you can get a feel for what life
was like before all the roads came in and experience the saltchuck like
the locals! Just before the road turns off to the BackEddy Pub is the entrance to Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park. This park is a real treat and one not to be missed on any Sunshine Coast visit. An easy 45 minute hike takes you in through forested trail and past serene lakes to the ultimate destination of the rocky outcrop jutting into Skookumchuck Narrows for a spectacular tidal show. At peak times the tide can vary by up to sixteen feet, making for tumultuous eddies, whirlpools and roaring waves standing stationary in front of you. (Check Bigpacific.com for best viewing times and tidal information). Down the road a piece from Egmont towards Pender Harbour lies beautiful Ruby Lake, a body of water that was once connected to the saltwater beyond the hills. If you are a diver you will be intrigued by the layer of salt water beneath the freshwater surface layer, and everyone will enjoy visiting ancient midden sites that were once saw many Sechelts gathering for meals of clams and oysters along the beaches of Ruby Lake. Ruby Lake is also home to the Ruby Lake Resort Restaurant and chef Aldo Cogrossi's Italian seafood creations from the finest traditions of Milan will tempt your palate for a great night out. Pender Harbour
Only 20 minutes from Ravens Cove is beautiful Pender Harbour with its stunning anchorages and protected bays perfect for an afternoon of leisurely exploring. Pender actually includes a number of communities - Madeira Park, Francis Peninsula, Irvine's Landing, Garden Bay, and the four main lakes in the area (Garden Bay Lake, Hotel Lake, Sakinaw Lake and Katherine Lake). There are numerous places to swim, canoe, row a boat, fish or just laze around and relax in the sun - or if you're feeling energetic try boarding the Harbour Hopper (Pender ferry) and cruising around the Harbour. Your pass allows you to jump off where you like and reboard later to continue the journey - up to six legs - and it's a great way to see the place. Restaurants/pubs include the Garden Bay Hotel, Sundowner Inn, Irvine's Landing Pub and The Roost for a range covering off hearty fish & chips pub fare right up to fine dining seaside. |
